FLAG Fluid Loss & Gain Detection Service

Early kick detection reduces well integrity risks

Offering an advantage of 5–10 min compared with conventional systems, the FLAG service quickly and reliably detects fluid influx and loss in the well, even at very low volumes, allowing more time for remedial action. This automated early kick detection service reduces the number of “false alarms” and, consequently, time-consuming flow checks.

Return flow measurement at flowline increases accuracy

The system is calibrated to compute theoretical return flow in real time. A Coriolis flowmeter installed in the return flowline continuously measures the actual flow; an electromagnetic flowmeter is used when space is limited.

By comparing the measured and theoretical return flows, the FLAG service can detect an influx or loss almost as soon as it occurs. Monitoring the flowline instead of the mud pit ensures faster detection of fluid loss and gain and a truer picture of downhole conditions unaffected by surface events, such as addition of chemicals to the mud pit or mud transfers.

The algorithm is accurate under a number of operating conditions—drilling, circulating, and cementing. The system automatically compensates for mud compressibility and various disturbances (e.g., pipe movement, heave on a floating rig, and transitional flow regimes created by events such as starting or stopping of the pumps).

Clear audible and visual outputs enhance safety

In addition to visual and audible alarms activated by preset thresholds, computed and measured data and the alarm status are continually displayed on monitors in log format. The FLAG service can be provided as a stand-alone service or as part of the OptiWell well construction performance service, which displays decision-ready information on drilling performance and safety acquired via multiple sensors in real time.
